Alois and Rita Kiefer founded the family business in 1950 with only three hectares of vineyards, which were also spread over around 80 plots. In the beginning, sales were as tedious as working in the vineyards: Alois, actually a trained baker who had trained through courses at the wine-growing school, focused on marketing bottled wines right from the start. With the bike and a few bottles in his luggage, he drove to Koblenz to gradually build up a customer base for his wines.
Changing winery
Until Philipp, Bernhard's son, joined the winery in 2008, all wines were labeled with the predicates. However, Philipp brought new ideas from his studies, restructured the range and used the predicates only for fine sweet wines. The range of grape varieties changed, the total number of wines was reduced despite new varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, and the varieties were no longer expanded in so many different ways.
